The really, really small dancers are now on stage - 3, 4 & 5 years old and some in their first competition....these are the dancers who are the future of Irish Dancing and the hall is pleased to see them on stage.

The Irish Dancing Health Food store is now open, selling hot chips, pies and the usual range of comestibles that power our dancers.  And the chocolate crackles futures are holding up well too :)

Feis update

As the set dances progress and we move towards presentations, the next age groups are arriving.  The hall is quite full now, with excited 10 Years & under, many of whom are in the first competitions....lots os=f small dancers practicing steps, weaving in and out of other dancers, chairs and the vendor stalls.

Speaking of vendors, both Gerry & Pauline are here for the weekend, so if you need supplies, now would be a good time to get them.

And the stage lighting is being adjusted.....a nice touch, probably unnoticed by competitors and parents, is the disco ball which is slowly spinning and adds a slightly surreal feel to the music.

Feis update

ChaosCentral is powered by chocolate crackles and because of the extraordinary generosity of Elizabeth Larnach, we have had a fully-fuelled start to the day :)

The feis is running on time, with the soft shoe round of the 9 & 10 Years underway.  Set dances will follow, then presentations.

The feis will have an early finish today, the room is booked by another function and must be vacated by 1600.

Gourmet food update

The Irish Dancing health food shoppe has opened, with chips, wedges, pies, sausage rolls and fried fish. Not a chocolate crackle in sight :)

However, a recent dispatch from the Fishers Ghost Feis organisers intimated that a special chocolate crackle project was underway, the results of which may be available at the Fishers Ghost Feis later this year.

It is unknown whether the organisers of the World Championships in Dublin are aware of the importance of the chocolate crackle to Irish Dancing in Australia.

Feis update

The last of the graded dancers have been called to marshalling in the 7 & 8 Years age groups. Following these last dancers, the Premierships will be danced, then prizes.

This is the first NSW feis for the year; it is wonderful to see the familiar faces back for another competition year, and also to see new faces of younger dancers competing for the first time. And, in at least one case, to see an old face in a new context - Kristen Piper and her school Scoil Rince Ni Piobaire. New dance schools starting can only strengthen the popularity of Irish Dancing and help it continue as older dancers leave over time.

The final section of the feis is about to hit the stage, then it is all over! We are running early, a credit to the organisers and a nice change for all.

Later tonight, once ChaosCentral wends its way back to Sydney, it hopes to receive an email that will list the winners of each of the 85 sections, and the aggregate winners in the age groups.

Gourmet food update

There is an old-fashioned sweet shop in Berrima, which has always been a favourite rest stop for ChaosCentral as it motors towards Canberra in its vintage Mercedes saloon. A younger member of ChaosCentral staff had the driving duties this trip, in an effort to meet the NSW government's requirement that all L drivers accumulate a minimum of 25% of their lifetime in driving hours before sitting their P test.

Said younger staff member has just returned from the aforementioned saloon with a carry-bag full of sweet delights, which are now being rummaged for the best bits, the remainder will be offered to other staff members upon our return to Sydney.

Harsh, but fair - we had to travel here and back!

Feis reorganisation

The backstage has just been reorganised - speakers have been repositioned to point towards the dancers so that they can better hear the music, resulting in a move to the front of stage for the announcer and support staff :)

Feis update

The sections are progressing nicely, and generally in the order of the program. We appear to be on time and so there should be another set of presentations, which ChaosCentral can't put up - yet.

The reason for this is as follows:

• adjudicator gives marks to tabulators
• they enter it into a spreadsheet
• spreadsheet is printed and given to announcer
• announcer is the only person who knows how many get a "place" in the section, and how many are "highly commended"
• ChaosCentral is busy photographing and can't also write the details at the same time (note to self, must do better)
• if ChaosCentral was given the spreadsheet, there is no way to determine if a section had 1st, 2nd, 3rd, HC, HC, HC, or just 1st and five HC; getting this wrong would result in an international incident

So, until someone gives ChaosCentral a marked-up set of results, they can't be posted here.

A dancing observation

As a completely unqualified entity to make this comment, it is interesting to note that, as the age groups progress past about the 11 years, more of the dancers leave the stage and pass by ChaosCentral audibly puffing, rather like a 38 Class steam locomotive. This could be because of the increased effort they put into the dancing, the fitness equation changing as they get older, or some completely unrelated set of circumstances. Still, it is an audible difference, and each of the dancers is more fit than ChaosCentral ever was, even in the peak of rowing fitness several geological ages ago :)

There was a very brief stage presentation, some may have left and some were not in costume so couldn't be photographed.

Not a chocolate crackle to bee seen. However, the rolls and toasted sandwiches, ham and cheese croissants and other food is wonderful!

As the older age groups progress, the food will diminish - so get in early.

Individual results won't be posted here as there are 85 sections, the results aren't computer-recorded in the same manner as they are announced on stage. So, as ChaosCentral can't photograph and record placings at the same time........sorry.

Whilst there results are being tabulated, the 9 & 10 years will continue.

5 & 6 years now dancing

This is the youngest age group and for most of these dancers, it is the first time they have competed or even been on a stage in front of a crowd. The hall was very silent whilst they danced and at the end, they all received a round of applause, running and skipping from the stage back to their parents.

Feis update

Some of the older age groups (11+) are starting to filter in to the hall - there is a gentle buzz in the room, not enough to bother the adjudicator, but noticeable.

Outside is still overcast and drizzly but the hall is warm and very comfortable, plenty of seating, good sound, large stage, a canteen and a vendor - all that one needs, except for the fathers' creche.

We are working our way through the younger age groups, the hall is buzzing with the sounds of little dancers, excited to be in their first feis for the year, and for some, their first ever feis.

There is also the sound of prospective irish dancers, usually the much younger siblings of the youngest dancers....they are amusing themselves by crying from time to time and letting us all know that there is yet a younger generation on its way.

We are now up to section 10, presentations are due sometime after 10:00 but there is no way to tell how well we are running to time, but everyone is having fun!

Welcome to Feile Nua

We are at Daramalan College in Dickson, ACT, for the first feis of the year for ChaosCentral.

Whilst most normal people were resting, ChaosCentral was as busy as a politician realising that the election is next week, and suddenly doing things to look busy. So, we have made some changes around here.

Firstly, LiveCommentary is now available at the address livecommentary.swoose.net, it will also work at the old address.

Secondly, LiveCam is now at http://www.livestream.com/australianirishdancing and will hopefully be rid of the inappropriate ads that came with the other service provider.

And finally, there will be guest commentators at ChoasCentral this year, possibly in other states as well!

So, on to the feis.

The adjudicator for today is Brendan Tiernan ADCRG, resplendent in stripes on the marking podium :)

There are 85 sections today, with variable numbers and as they are too numerous, and as ChaosCentral can't touch type (!), we will bring you highlights as we can.

(Probably) Final World Championship update

Previously, I posted "However, the sponsorship trail is long and hard and.......not very successful. To date, Qantas, Etihad and Irish Dancing Magazine have declined to offer sponsorship, but I will keep trying!!!"

I can now add that Tourism Ireland has also declined to offer any sponsorship for me to photograph Australian and NZ dancers.

So, that means that I won't be going, and there will be no free high-resolution photos of our fabulous Australian and NZ dancers. Sorry, I did the best I could.

Also, the devastating Christchurch earthquake has disrupted my plans to be in Auckland to photograph the AIDA NZ Feis on the 6th March. I am very sorry that I can't be there, but I will try to get to another NZ feis this year, perhaps the Nationals?

Finally, the QLD Flood Fundraising by clicking has all but come to a standstill, with people deciding, apparently, that it is OK to receive the photos, LiveCommentary and LiveCam free, but not to make the effort, on a daily basis, to help the people of QLD. I am saddened by this - I expected more, but I was probably expecting too much. Sadly, this will have a material impact on the ID community, something that I will announce later.

So, enjoy the free stuff while you can, it may not be around for too much longer.

World Championships are almost here!!!

Wishing the best of luck to all followers of LiveCommentary and all dancers competing in the 2011 World Championships.

Your correspondent continues to seek sponsorship for airfares and/or accommodation to attend the Worlds and to photograph the Australian and NZ dancers. Of course, the photos will be on www.swoose.net and free to anyone.

However, the sponsorship trail is long and hard and.......not very successful. To date, Qantas, Etihad and Irish Dancing Magazine have declined to offer sponsorship, but I will keep trying!!!

And a first for www.swoose.net, I will be photographing the AIDA NZ Feis in Auckland on Sunday 6th March - there will be no LiveCam or LiveCommentary as I have no mobile internet in NZ - but there will be photos later!!

Farewell from the Nationals

ChaosCentral, in full flight at the Ceili (some members of ChaosCentral would be unable to drive a car for 12 hours or fly a plane for 36 hours) would like to bid all our Gentle Readers a fond farewell, and hope that in future the LiveCam will also be available at Nationals as it is in every other country.

Liz, Eleanor, Kerry, Amanda, Marcus and the phantom contributor had great pleasure in bringing you results, commentary and boring you silly with the other minutiae that makes up a National Championship. Chocolate crackles still not sighted, but perhaps if we venture to NZ we may have better luck :)

Senior Figures aren't always as serious as you might think. The hall just rocked with laughter as the dancers formed scrums and played baseball and had a thoroughly good time. I didn't know Clive James could dance!

Gourmet food update

Whilst we wait for the Senior Figures to get their act together, it is worthwhile recapping on the Gourmet Food highlights of the week......there was the home-made rocky road from Jennifer and Anne (thank you, very nice and it disappeared very quickly), then there was.............well, that was about it, not a chocolate crackle sighted, despite search parties and co-opting resources from the NASA Lunar Mapping project satellites.

So, another Nationals passes without any vendors realising the commercial value of the chocolate crackle (although they are better in bunches).

Excitement!!

The Buzz is building in the main arena as more people come in to watch the Senior Figure. Chaos Central has been joined by one of Australia's leading dressmakers and designers, and she is pointing out the finer points of the choreography, as well as discussing evolving dress trends, sub-editing this post, and generally making a nuisance of herself.

ChaosCentral is contributing to her knowledge by pointing out that they don't understand a word she is talking about.
