Welcome to the 2019 Canberra Feis

This morning, ChaosCentral mounted its old but trusty steed and ventured down the highway to Australia's capital of Chaos, Canberra.  A pleasant three hour drive later and we arrived to a crisp and sunny morning, a distinct contrast to the wet and rainy Sydney that we left.

The Canberra Feis is a brilliant All-in-1 (trademark belongs to a long-gone computer company) event, where competitors can eat, sleep and compete at the venue, the Rex Hotel.  And the purpose-built dance floor and dancing hall is wonderful for competitors and spectators alike.

Today's adjudicator is Chris Carswell ADCRG (VIC) and music by eDevice.

Technology update

ChaosCentral is experimenting with a Canon EOS M50 (https://www.canon.com.au/cameras/eos-m50) to explore its capabilities when using the EF lenses used on the DSLRs we usually use.  Key learnings so far:

  • using the larger EF lenses with a tiny camera body feels very strange;
  • using face-detect for the presentation shots makes focusing more simple, but causes "image in the frame" centering problems as we adapt to having the focus point move around rather than being fixed;
  • EVF v OVF increases visual lag, minimal but noticeable;
  • AI Servo tracking with multi-shot and face detection works extremely well once a target face is acquired, works less well when multiple faces are in a group or moving in and out of a group, it tries to select the "best" face rather than the one the photographer may want;
  • image quality is excellent at f2.8, 1/400, ISO 100 up to ISO 1600;
  • with all the detection/focus-tracking options set on, battery life is not good, probably 300 shots, that means one battery per section!
There is no intention of using the M50 for action shots, but it does an exceptional job for presentation shots when used with EF lenses.  More details as the experimentation continues...

Playing with new technology...Canon EOS M50 with the Canon EF 70-200 f2.8 IS MkII lens attached...not a bad mix of technology and the M50 seems to take nice snaps :)

Welcome to the 2019 AIDA NSW Graded Competition & St Patrick's Day Premiership

A new dancing year has landed and ChaosCentral is, once again, trialling new technology to bring you the best possible experience...or something like that :)

The NSW dancing year starts with this competition and we are at the Blacktown RSL, a venue known for plentiful parking, a great dancing stage and copious food and drinks.  Although the autumn sky is cloudy and threatening outside, it will still reach a mild 30C...perhaps.

And on to the competition details...

Our adjudicator is Bernadette Weeks ADCRG, and music is by e/i Device...
